Less Makeup, More Brow

August 29, 2011

There was a déjà vu on the international runways showing this fall’s collections. Besides similar fashion trends such as loose-fitting pants, menswear-inspired tailoring and loafer-heavy footwear, it’s the repeat of androgynous hair and makeup from last fall that caught our attention.

This season’s extreme minimal look will lighten your makeup bag with an emphasis put on a perfect, hydrated complexion and full, bold brows. Leave the colour for your clothes and try these beauty tips to achieve this fall’s look:

Bare It All

The amount of makeup you apply really depends on how good your skin looks naturally. Applying concealer under the eyes that’s one shade lighter than your skin tone will brighten your face and cover any darkness. In terms of foundation, you can either opt for light coverage with a tinted moisturizer, medium coverage with liquid foundation, or full coverage with cream foundation. Powder often dries-out the face, especially during the fall and winter; save it for touch-ups or apply translucent powder with a round-brush on top of your foundation to reduce shine.

Suggestion: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20, Dior Capture Totale Foundation, Cover FX Total Coverage Cream Foundation SPF 30

Angular Definition

Now that you can’t hide behind your summer tan, it’s time to turn to your bronzer to create a sun-kissed, healthy complexion and contoured cheekbones, no matter the weather. Part of this fall’s androgynous look comes with deeper cheekbones for a more masculine face. This is best created using both a fan brush to outline and a blush brush to fill in the shapes.

Suggestion: Guerlain Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing Powder

Let it Grow

Your brows are your statement facial feature this season. With a bare face, a contrasting dark and thick brow will give an edge to your look, bringing all attention to your eyes. To achieve this look, a good first step is to let your brows grow, and then reshape with a slight arch. It’s important not to mistake bold with bushy — thicker brows call for more grooming. If you have light, fair brows, use an angled brow brush and brow pigments to fill them in and enhance their shape.

Suggestion: Sephora Collection Beauty in a Box Perfect Brow Tutorial
