Founded in
1979, Landmark East is a co-ed day school dedicated to helping students with learning disabilities. This
boarding school offers English-only, cognitive development programs to students between the ages of eight and
19 years. It strives to assist students in achieving their academic, social and life goals through adaptive
strategies designed to meet each student’s needs. Throughout grades three to 12, admission is done on the
basis of an interview, which is scheduled after the student's file has been reviewed by the admissions
committee.
The
elementary program is offered to students who have trouble acquiring literacy skills. The program runs
through grades three to five for students between the ages of eight and 11. The program helps students
develop an understanding for various subjects such as: art; arithmetic; comprehension; oral and written
skills. One of the best features of this program is that it offers daily tutorials to students.
The middle
school program, encompassing grades six to nine, incorporates a multi-sensory approach that allows students
to achieve academic excellence. The program aims at developing literacy, numeracy and study skills. Students
participate in daily, 90-minute activities and physical education programs; 60-minute supervised study hall
classes and a one-on-one language tutorial.
The high
school program, offered to students in grades 10 to 12, follows the requirements of the Nova Scotia Public
School Program. The objective is to prepare students for their future education so that they succeed with
admission into post secondary institutions. Upon completion, students receive graduate diplomas from the Nova
Scotia Department of Education.
The school
also offers to international students the English as a Second Language (ESL) program in order to assist in
improving oral and literacy in the English language. Students can avail the speech-language therapy if
required. Landmark East aims at helping students excel in academics through their Transition Year Program.
This program helps students, who even after completing grade 12, feel they need more preparation to succeed
in a post-secondary education institution. To prepare them for various challenges, the program provides
opportunities for the development of self-confidence and competence by getting students actively involved in
the community.
Apart from helping students with reading and writing, the school offers a range of activities for personal
growth. Students participate in art, music, recreational activities and equestrian programs. Individual and
team sports such as basketball, volleyball, skiing, swimming and tennis teach students about independence,
self-control and teamwork. Students can also get involved with the student council, where they can contribute
to decision-making about the activities and events held during the school year.
A student’s experience at Landmark East not only helps in achieving academic excellence, but also overall
personality development by acquiring the skills needed to achieve life goals. Students and parents can visit
the campus, get a tour of the school and ask questions to facilitate their decision to attend this fine
school. •
