Set sail in Style

Enjoy an enchanting journey through france

By Hannah Mohammed | December 15, 2010

For those looking for an unforgettable getaway, sailing through the enchanting canals of France could be the vacation they have always dreamed of. Bell Travel, a renowned travel agency operating out of British Columbia for 35 years, offers an array of luxuries on their world-renowned Luciole Barge tour, giving passengers the chance to take the cruise of their lives.

The Luciole Barge tour takes place through the canal of Nivernais, France, noted as being one of the most beautiful and inviting journeys by its travellers. Accompanied by a private tour bus, passengers have the chance to go on excursions off the barge into historic and culturally rich regions such as market towns and vineyards.

One of the owners of Bell Tours, Heather Bell, says the tours they offer are first-class endeavours:

“We are very caring and we pay attention to detail on our tours. We have been guiding for so long that it is second nature to us and we have clients all around the world who request our services... We are also very knowledgeable when doing our tour commentary and as a result have set a very high standard for our tours.”

The journey begins in Paris where the passengers will group before the trip to the historical city of Auxerre in Burgundy. There, the Luciole waits with a champagne reception and stellar accommodations. Over the next few days, guests have the chance to shop and eat in Auxerre, go to wine cellars in Chablis, moor at night in Lucy-sur-Yonne and visit historic marvels such as the 12th-century basilica in Vézelay and the medieval town of Clamecy. Bikes for travel are also provided on the boat so passengers can explore the towns with ease.

The barge can hold up to 14 passengers comfortably and offers all of the amenities of home. Cabins on board can be either double or twin bedded. Each cabin has its own shower, bathroom and central air, making the rooms fully equipped for a weeklong stay.

The dining aboard the barge provides for a unique experience as the vibrant chefs use fresh produce and ingredients from France to create the finest cuisine for their guests.

John and Penny Liley, owners of the Luciole Barge, say that with the warm spirit and expertise of the crew of six, all of whom are British or English-speaking, they combine gastronomy and comfort with thoughtful personal service throughout each cruise.

The barge can be chartered exclusively for groups of friends, family or even businesses or special interest organizations where individual itineraries can be created. If a group is not an option, then Bell Travel can book you and yours as individuals on a regular departure. •

T
he Luciole Barge tour is available from April to November of next year. Send an email to boating@belltours.ca or phone 1-800-665-9501 for more information.
