From the high notes
to the low notes, the True North Brass ensemble resonates with authentic Canadian sound. This group exploded
onto the scene in 1997 and has since established itself as one of the world’s finest brass ensembles. The
group includes tubist Scott Irvine, trombone player Alastair Kay, Joan Watson on horn, and trumpet players
Raymond Tizzard and Richard Sandals.
True North Brass’s outstanding talents and distinguished music of accurate pitch, light tones and crisp
attacks are embellished throughout their concerts and four critically acclaimed CDs.
Their self-titled debut CD was released in 1998. It showcases their versatility, which has now become the
group’s trademark. With their second album Strong & Free, the group’s range of Canadian music
was exemplified with folk song arrangements and works from Jim McGrath and Malcolm Forsyth.
Their third CD was dedicated to Christmas, while their latest, Beginning to See the Light, pays
tribute to the performers and composers who’ve helped define Canada’s musical landscape. At their concert in
Port Hope, expect songs from their collection of compositions like Carloca, Air Varie and
Czardas.
Even though they are proud to be Canadian, they also boost their international appeal and outlook by
performing for audiences all over the world. However, the small town of Port Hope now has the opportunity to
tune its ears into their infectious music and arrangements. During the holiday, treat yourself and your
family to an outstanding performance by this internationally renowned Canadian music sensation. •
